Painting Update

Hello everyone,

I hope all is going well for one and all. I can’t believe how quickly the month has gotten away from me…but I also wanted to share with you folks a quick painting update. Last time I got together with Duncan and Mike, we were looking at some of Duncan’s pile of lead and I asked Duncan if he wanted me to paint up a few pieces for him…after all, I’ve been a fortunate recipient of some of his 3d prints, so literally the least I could do for him.

I’m about half-way through the figures…I’m not sure who the manufacturer is, but they are 28mm…they look to be moderns, I’d say circa 2000’s…and were fun to paint up. They’re metal and unfortunately some of the details and casting is a little sketchy. Hopefully they’ll pass the muster for Duncan.

I had to think for a bit on how to paint these up and I ended up up settling on Soviet/Russian airborne and GRU uniforms (circa 1980’s war) and private drone contractors dressed in suitable non-specific uniforms.

First Painting Update of the Year

Howdy folks,

In the interest of getting eyeballs on figs, please enjoy this very short post...

As promised I am finally getting to putting up pics of the first painting update of the year.  While I have posted painting progress, it was just to close out some painting updates from the last year.  This post is certainly a mix of genres and miniature companies and all figs were completed by the end of January.

These two figures were from a line called Ral Partha...I'm not very familiar with it and if I recall correctly, I purchased this pack of 2 Banditos in a clearance bin...maybe in North Bay.  They did paint up quite nicely and are a little on the 'epic-y' side of the scale, but they should fit in nicely with my other figs. 

 

 

I cannot recall where Clint came from...I remember getting a little plastic bag thrown my way from my buddy Mike, but other than that...that's all I got.  The figure is a little on the small side of 28mm, especially when compared with the two amigos above...however, just like them I elected to keep the basing fairly simple on this one.  For the most part, the inspiration for Clint's paint scheme came from the Good the Bad and the Ugly.

 

 

These two are from Hasslefree Miniatures from their human sci-fi range...inspired from the Battlestar Galactica reimagined series, I couldn't wait to get to these two.  Nailing the exact colour of their uniforms was a challenge as screen shots from the series shows a wide variance in tone depending on lighting conditions...I'm pretty happy with the results and can't wait to add some more of these BSG inspired models to the fray. 

 

Another Hasslefree figure, I bought this zombie Doc on a whim and figured that I could add him in wherever in my gaming 'verse.  I took a little extra time to get some shades on his labcoat and show some good 'zombification' on him...I also took some extra time on the basing to get the look of post-apoc...

 

Finally, the last two are remainders from another blister of knights from Crusader Miniatures that I used for my SAGA Crusader army; in this case I themed them rather generically and based them for some Frostgrave-y type locales.  I thought I'd try my hand at some sculpting of extras using milliput.  I also was curious how my new painting technique would look on these figures as my previous knights were painted when I relied heavily on a base coat and a dry brush.  I'm pretty happy overall with the results, I really like how the painting came out...and I know that I certainly need some more practice on sculpting, but with fairly non-critical additions like furs or bags, the sculpting can be pretty forgiving.

Last Figs of the Year...and quick Recap

Howdy folks,

Happy New Year and Merry Christmas, I hope the holidays were kind to you and yours...we've had an on again off again relationship with winter this holiday season...today we still have snow on the ground but are hovering around +1C so it could go either way.

The final stages of the year certainly kept me distracted from keeping my posting momentum, however I was still able to get some solid painting in...and I think I finished the year on an upswing having pushed through some terrain pieces, some Legion, and random other pieces.  Having put my toe and foot into Star Wars Legion, I have been working through the expansion boxes that are of particular interest for me...their terrain expansion offers a great range of aesthetic for any tabletop and has some options for objectives.

As you can see, the box offers 12 pieces that includes 4 moisture vaporators, 3 communication stations, and 5 crates of various size and makeup.  For the comm stations, I have based them for 3 possible 'settings'...Hoth, somewhere desert/arid, and black shiny floor for any Imperial installation.

By the end of the year I had also finished up a few Legion characters and finally finished up the last of my Rogue Stars figures that I had gotten a Christmas or two ago.  In a lot of ways, I'm glad that it took me some time to get to these last Rogue figures...there was a lot of detail in the Rogue that my previous painting style would not have done justice too...and the Smuggler was a challenge, the cast of the face made it difficult for me to get some proper features...but I tried my best with it, and after re-reading the description from North Star, I was able to get to a result that I was happy with.

A lot of great detail elements in this model meant a little extra care to make sure I was able to get them all to pop out...

Finally, I worked through some commander expansions for Legion...Boba Fett and Han Solo are both great looking figures, although I think I would've preferred a different setting for Solo...but hey, it works in the overall theme.  Of the two, the Fett Man was definitely the most challenging to undertake...this figure has a lot of elements to it, all with differing colour palettes and shades, and it can be a little intimidating trying to make it all fit, because let me tell you, there is some great artwork and graphics out there of this dude.  Here are a couple of pics to tease, I'll post separately on these two...

Now, this is normally the point where I take last years objectives and go through to see how I actually did...saving a few keystrokes, I will sum it up this way...the expedition for 2018 was somewhat successful...it didn't reach the heights that I wanted it to and the final tallies are definitely much lower than previous years.  However, there was some considerable adjustments to my free-time throughout the year and my posting and painting output certainly reflected that.  All in all, I consider a solid base camp has been established to support next years climb.

For 2019, my goals are simply to push with Legion to the point of hopefully getting a table or two of terrain together to run some demo games at CanGames this year.  I want to continue with my 4CMBG force and there is some Stalingrad gaming coming up at the club, so anything I can do to get figs together for that will be awesome.
