Star Wars Legion - Cassian & K2

Howdy folks,

I hope all is well on your respective sides of the table. I’ve slowly been carrying on with the painting pile, although admittedly, with summer upon us…there have been a few nights maximizing outdoor time and minimizing painting time. Nonetheless, I have made a resolution to try to increase my output…so we’ll see how that progresses.

To help kick it off I’ve recently completed the Cassian & K2 pack that I received this past Christmas. The figures were very slick to put together and are great sculpts. There are a few options but they are very dynamic and really look awesome.

I’m really happy with how they turned out…I like the weathering and scratches that I put on K2, and I really like the tone I got on Cassian’s jacket. I ended up mixing that tone myself, but I think it started as Vallejo magic blue with some blue-green in the mix.

Having completed Jyn last year I tried to get the bases as complimentary as possible. At the end of the day I’m very happy with how they came out and how they mix with Jyn.

Another Painting Contest Down - Main Man Fred

 Hello all,

Jumping on my recent success with February’s painting contest with Red Dragon, I thought I’d keep up the momentum and try this ‘thing’ out again. For the most part, I think entry requirements were pretty much the same: purchase a 3D printed piece from their catalogue or (this time) purchase a certain amount of warhammer stuff and you’re good to go.

For this go, I ended up choosing a great looking bust of Freddy Krueger…not only did it look great, but my wife was a big Elm Street fan, so that helped the decision. It also gave a great excuse to rewatch the original Nightmare for the requisite research.

I’m happy to say the research and efforts paid off and I walked away with a win for Fred and an awesome Turbodork paintset for my efforts. I hope you enjoy the pics (I had to take a buttload for the contest).

Cyberpunk Monster Fight Club style...

Hello Everyone,

  

I hope all is well out there...over the course of last years lockdown I discovered a few new creators and distribution points for miniatures. One of those that were new to me was Monster Fight Club. Since then I have seen some references to kickstarter and thanks to their newsletter I am seeing their latest updates as they go live and to their store.

Inspired by a post I saw on a reddit group, I went over and saw some of the Cyberpunk range that Monster Fight Club has. Liking what I saw and very reminiscent of the original Blade Runner, I picked out a 'Deckard' looking figure that comes with a body suitable enough to look cyborgy for him to loom over if you want to make a diorama of it all...I also grabbed another blister to rationalize the shipping.

Happy to say that these characters made it onto the work bench and offered me a chance to try some different techniques on basing. Specifically, solely painting on street-worn sidewalk and texturing. The figures themselves looked outstanding and were very clean . They painted up nicely and I was able to do a nice homage to Deckard in a pseudo-CSI theme...or given the blue gloves, '2 by 2 hands of blue'...for any browncoats out there...

Post-Apoc Terrain

 Howdy folks,

 

Not that long ago I was fortunate to receive an award at work...hooray...and along with the recognition came a gift card for online shopping. So, armed with said card I bought a few items for myself and the missus...and with a little left over I decided to buy some 3D printed terrain pieces. I ended up going with War World Gaming and their boggy, industrial waste, post-apocalypty cess pools of radioactive goo from hell. Having seen a few examples of pools and such in some YouTube battle reports, I thought they would be perfect for any Fallout or Zona Alfa work.

 

They painted up quite nicely and were a great little distraction from my painting contest focus. Anyhow, not much else to add to this one...take care all, and I hope you enjoy the pics.

May the Fourth-ish...

 Hello everyone,

Well, I missed the May the Fourth window, but if I hadn't, I would have posted some pics of a couple of Star Wars Legion characters that I got for Christmas. Although not really in the timeline that I am gaming, it was great to see Darth Maul and Cad Bane show up for the holidays.

Both poses are pretty dynamic and were a treat to paint up. Surprisingly they came up quite quickly for me and I am very happy with their turnout.

With Cad Bane all I got was this old west vibe and really want to punch up the hat and coat. His skin tones and equipment were an interesting colour mix for me, but I think they turned out really well. The box came with a couple of options for head and facial expressions, but I couldn't turn that hat down.

Darth Maul was a very expressive figure and really captured the look and feel of the Phantom Menace...or should I say, Ray Park really captured the look and feel of Maul. Either way, they are both quite complimentary and the all dark wardrobe was a good exercise in dark tones and highlights.

A Few Crisis Protocol Heroes

 Hello everyone,

I hope all is well on your side. I thought I'd get my post count a moving and bring you a couple of figures from the Marvel Crisis Protocol starter box. I am just about through all the characters in the box, Doc Octopus and the Baron are waiting their turn, and am really liking these figures. They definitely are a test to the painting technique and skill but boy are they a lot of fun to paint up.

So for today, I have Captain Marvel and Crossbones. For both of these figures, I turned to my guy Sorastro for guidance and inspiration and found his video on Youtube and pdf guide on his website.

I have to say, Crossbones was pretty easy going compared to Captain Marvel, but was not without its challenges to paint up to the same standard. In the end, it was a real joy to paint...and I'm super happy with how it turned out. Marvel on the other hand was a definite exercise in patience and colour control. I did have to go back a couple of times to get the look and feel that I wanted, but again I am really happy with the turnout.

Crossbones and Captain Marvel...

 

 

Crossbones...

a relatively easier paint scheme than that of Marvel's, Crossbones was alot of fun to paint up and definitely was a different take on equipment and dress that I was 'somewhat' used to having tackled a fair amount of moderns beforehand.

with this style, a much heavier approach to highlights than I had tried in the past with any of my previous TAG moderns, but I really like how it turned out...and the skull is just so Punisher-esque, I really pushed to highlight it even more...

Captain Marvel is alot of highlight and source lighting in motion...I found her a real challenge and I think I went back at least 3 times in sections to get the look and feel that I liked. Looking at how Sorastro approached her basing (he references another site that I simply cannot remember), I couldn't help but want to achieve that level of pop and energy...I may have gone a little overboard on it, but I really like the contrast between the glow and the dull of the base.
